Sherry MacDowell-Walken (シェリー・マクダウェル=ウォーケン?), formerly Sherry Walken (シェリー・ウォーケン Sherī Wōken?) is Bear Walken's daughter and Harry MacDowell's wife. Her mother, though not spoken about in detail, is revealed as Japanese in episode 23 of the anime and therefore making Sherry a blasian or hafu.

After Millennion's downfall (which included both her and Harry's deaths) in the first game, she is reincarnated as a Deadman and recruited into the Corsione Family in which she works as Don Corsione's bodyguard. She is a major antagonist in Gungrave: Overdose.

Personality[]

In her first appearance at around twelve years old Sherry comes across as a well-mannered, enthusiastic and assertive woman. As she ages, her personality mellows out into a quieter one. No longer the little girl who would have to remind people to introduce her in conversations, but instead a fully matured woman who having lived the life of a mafioso’s daughter and prepared for the dangers that could lie ahead, is fully confident and prepared to go through life however she pleases.

Sherry however can be a bit reckless and carefree, dating Harry despite the danger she’s already seen and been warned about. In the future she never questions anything she’s told, too used to living in luxury and keeping her nose out of trouble to avoid getting hurt.

History[]

Sherry met Harry MacDowell after he and Brandon Heat were inducted within Millennium's 'Family'--a close-knit group of friends that Big Daddy viewed as being part of his family, falling in love with him almost immediately.[1] At first Harry only sees her as another member of the family but grows to like Sherry more until he fell in love with her in turn. In a conversation between Harry, Li, and Bob, Li teases Harry stating that Harry isn't interested in Sherry in actuality and sees her only as Bear's daughter who can be used as an upper hand to Bear. Harry replies by saying that he doesn't know what Li is talking about and has loved Sherry from the moment he saw her from the bottom of his heart. Although Bear was a little suspicious of Harry’s intentions at first and forbade Sherry to go out with Harry, Sherry tells him she's willing to die for Harry just like how her father is ready to died for Big Daddy. Bear then tells her he does not want her to end up like her mother. Bear then decides to test Harry instead and finally approves of Harry to allow him to marry Sherry.

In a casual conversation with Brandon, Harry shares that Sherry's relationship with her father has been strained and that they continue to clash at times. Harry goes on to share that she is still a student living a normal life with her studies and spending time with her friends. He then invites Brandon to go on a double date with Sherry and one of her friends to which Brandon says he would consider it.

After Brandon is killed, Harry and Sherry are shown spending time together in their home discussing prospective marriage plans and a future together. Harry says that he plans on marrying her once he has accomplished more of his goals in Millennium to which she agreed. He then confided in her that he has been emotionally suffering since the death of his best friend, careful to not disclose that he was the one who murdered him. Sherry comforted him and gives him the space to mourn and weep. During Bear's flashback, the day of Sherry and Harry's wedding is shown at the steps of a Catholic Church. Thirteen years later, Sherry is seen having dinner with her father and her husband, Bear expressing hope to seeing his future grandchildren. Harry states that he has attempted to father children with Sherry many times, although presumably without success. Sherry playfully admonishes Harry for his crudeness. At the news of her father's death, she mourns with Harry.

Sherry is then tragically shot in front of Harry during a power struggle between Harry and dissenting board members of Millennium, two days after her father Bear was killed in a battle with the reincarnated Brandon, now known as Beyond the Grave. Harry, heartbroken about what had just happened, weeps and cries aloud at the death of his wife in realization that the life he has built ultimately brought an end to his true love. He held Sherry in his arms on the drive to a church, crying as he drove, and was the only one to attend her funeral.

Gungrave: Overdose[]

Sherry returns through necrolization in the sequel, intending to take revenge on Grave for her husband and father's deaths.

Cid Gallarde[]

Growing up in Millennion's inner circle means Sherry considers many members to be family, but especially Cid since he's Bear's best friend. She calls him "Uncle Cid" and it's safe to assume he's been there since she was born. Just like a normal Uncle he exclaims "You've gotten so big!" When he sees Sherry during the Family episode of the anime, meaning work probably kept them from seeing each other often. Regardless, Sherry trusts Cid just as much as her father does and is happy to see him whenever she can.

Gameplay[]

Boss Battle[]

It’s been a long time… Hasn’t it Grave? What’s the matter, have you forgotten me? I guess that's to be expected, isn't it? After all, you threw everything away when you died. You must have. Otherwise… No human being could do what you do… I can never forgive you. Everything I care about, you took from me. My father… And my beloved Harry… All gone… Because of you!!! This one’s for Harry Macdowell. Now it’s your turn… Brandon Heat!”

Sherry’s boss battle takes place a short-while after Bunji’s, starting as Grave walks into the next room of the level. The room itself is a big, empty metal area with no discerning features. Sherry monologues about why she’s here to get revenge on Grave, and then the boss fight commences. In the first half of the fight Sherry has a double-edged sword, but it breaks in the second half ultimately leading to her defeat. Once she’s defeated, she slumps against the wall and gives Grave her parting words.

“It’s just as he said… You are death incarnate… How many more people must you kill before you’re satisfied? It doesn’t matter… I… I’ll finally be reunited with my beloved… My… Harry…”

Then, she’s shown peacefully closing her eyes and falling to the side, leaving a smear of fresh blood on the wall in her wake.

Moveset[]

Sherry’s necrolization has given her more speed similar to Bunji, which she uses for mobility during the fight. She usually uses it to dash towards the player, appearing near them almost instantly and leaving a blue after-image trail behind her.

  • Stunning Kick: Sherry dashes towards the player, jumps into the air and kicks five times quickly before kicking you straight back on the sixth which causes a fall down stun.
  • Double-Edged Sword Slashes: Sherry stands a distance away from the player, slashing her double-edged sword-blade in a long-distance attack. The attack can either be blue or white and can be fired multiple times.

Second Phase / Health bar[]

Once Sherry loses her first of two health bars, the side of her double-edged sword with the two blades breaks. It knocks her back some, and upon seeing her weapon broken she exclaims “I don’t need this piece of junk!” and shatters the rest of the weapon in rage by throwing it up and high kicking it. From here on she fights exclusively with martial arts. It appears that she does less damage but is slightly faster during her final phase.

Trivia[]

  • Sherry's design from Gungrave: Overdose is retooled for Zapp Renfro of Yasuhiro Nightow's manga Blood Blockade Battlefront.
  • In Bear's flashbacks to Sherry's childhood prior to his death in the anime, Sherry is seen holding a teddy bear with Bear's characteristic sunglasses, a play on Bear's name.
  • While alive Sherry’s appearance resembles her mother, and after she dies her appearance more resembles her father.
